Immune System Interactions with the Digestive System

By Anna

The Digestive System plays a very importsnt role in helping the Immune fight off Pathogens and Diseases. Spicfically it works hard to prevent Pathogens from getting into the Blood. The Stomach has a low pH that kills many microorganisms that enter it. These microorgansims could make you sick if they were not killed. Mucous has antibodies that also nutralize many microorganisms, to once again prevent disease. Enzymes and Silivia in Bile in the Intestines (specifally the large intestine,) help to nurtalize anigens.

Finally, our bodies have healthy bacteria in our intestines which help prevent the over growth of potentially harmful bacteria in the stomach. This healthy Bacteria also helps form a barrier in the intestines, to prevent harmful bacteria from entering into the blood and Lymph systems. All of these substances and nutralizers in the Digestive System, help make the Immune Systems job easier, by getting rid of some of these pathogens.

Fun Fact- Did you know that about 70% of a persons Immune System is in the Digestive Track?
