they are made of smooth muscle, the intestines are smooth muscle so they have there features. it does not require a message from the brain, so when the food leaves the stomach and enters the small intestine it automatically contracts squeezing the waste through the digestive tract while also absorbing nutrients for the cells in the body to perform cell respiration. With out the smooth muscle in the intestines from the muscular system the digestion system is useless. And with out the nutrients from the digestive system the muscular system and all other systems would die.
