Respiratory System structures and functions.

Structure: Function:

-Bronchioles- Branch off bronchi with alveoli - Bring air to alveoli

-Bronchi- Branch off trachea with mucus and cilia - Get air from bronchioles

- Cilia- Tiny hair-like structures that line the trachea and bronchi - Wave back and forth to move mucus up the trachea and bronchi.

-Alveoli (air sacs)- Tiny hollow air sacs that are wrapped in capillaries - Loading stations for gas exchange

-Diaphragm- Skeletal muscle below lungs - Contracts when you inhale and relaxes when you exhale

-Ribs- Form rib cage, contracts when inhale and relaxes when you exhale - Move in and out when you breath

-Nose- Short hairs, mucus, and capillaries - Filters and removes pollen, dust, and particles moisten/ warm or cool the air.

-Larynx- Made of cartilage, vocal chords-two elastic bands of tissue - Produces sound when air passes through.

-Trachea- lined with mucus and cilia. Made up of cartilage rings that are tough and flexible - brings air to bronchi

-Epiglottis- flap of tissue - Covers trachea so food doesn't go down it and black the air ways, lifts when you breathe.
