The Immune System protects the body from harmful pathogens such as viruses, bateria, and fungi. These Pathogens can be found all around us, in the Ecosystem. Bacteria can be found in dark, wet, warm, nutrient rich place, such as under a rock, or in she shade of a tree. Viruses need a host cell, but they can still be found in the Ecosystem in other animals such a bunnies or chickens. Lastly, Fungi is much like Bacteria in that it can be found under a rock, or in dark, wet, warm, nutrient rich places.
Pathogens can be introduced into the Immune System in a number of ways. They can get in through your nose and can be spread by air contact. For example when someone is sick and sneezes the pathogens can go into the air and you can breathe them in. Another way you can come in contact with pathogens from the Ecosystem is by direct contact. Sitting on a park bench, then touching your face can introduce the pathogens through your nose, mouth or eyes. Finally viruses and bacteria can be in the food we eat such as on potatoes grown in the ground or apples. Pathogens can also be in fresh eggs or animal meat.
Pathogens from foods (grown in the ecosystem), such as Salmonella can be serious if not treated. These are examples of foods that can be contaminated by Salmonella.

Another way the Immune System interacts with the Ecosystem is because of allergies. Allergens in the air can get into your body through your mouth, or nose, and irritate your immune system. The immune system, if you have allergys, is unusually sensitive to certain allergens, and over reacts when faced with one. This is why in the Spring many people have a cough, runny nose, and watery eyes from Pollen Allergies or others.
